. Introduced by 1999 Playmate of the Year Heather Kozar, this is a collection of video material featuring, essentially, Playboy wannabes, who send in amateur footage from which a panel selects a few for the ultimate Playboy video production process. The nice thing about this is the fact that, at least by Playboy standards, the girls are relatively normal. In ideal glamour model terms they've got a bit too much here, not quite enough there and so on--in other words, they come in as many shapes and sizes as real people do. Well, sort of. In the main feature, despite the fact that the babes all get the Playboy makeover treatment, there's still a certain amount of amateurism (and shaving rash) coming through, making you want to cheer them on as much as drool over them. On the DVD: American Beauties on disc is in 4:3 aspect ratio and in fact hides one of its best bits of content in the special features menu, which is a sequence of "100 per cent amateur" footage--presumably better-than-average examples of the original material sent in to the company--which is more erotic than the produced stuff (check out the scene set in the kitchen--it rather puts Nigella in her place) and which also makes for fun viewing with a partner.
